Short answer: You can usually pay for ChatGPT or Claude in India with a card that allows international online use, or through Apple and Google app-store billing, and ChatGPT has been reported to accept UPI. Claude's own checkout was reported in July 2026 not to accept UPI. I could only partly verify this today, and the post says exactly which parts.
Disclosure: the Scapia link is a referral link and the AICredits link is an affiliate link, and both appear in one short section near the end. I fetched Anthropic's pricing page on 23 Oct 2026. OpenAI's pricing and help pages returned HTTP 403 to my fetcher, Anthropic's payment-methods help article returned 404, and I did not make a purchase. INR figures below come from press reports and are labelled.
You want ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, you have a UPI app and a debit card, and the checkout page is not obviously friendly to either. Here is how to choose a route without paying twice.
What does each plan cost, and what could I verify?
| Item | What I found | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | 20 US dollars monthly, or 17 per month billed annually (200 up front) | claude.com/pricing, read 23 Oct 2026 |
| Claude Max | From 100 US dollars per month | claude.com/pricing, 23 Oct 2026 |
| Claude prices vs tax | Page says prices do not include applicable tax | claude.com/pricing, 23 Oct 2026 |
| Claude Pro in INR | Reported as 2,399 rupees monthly or 2,000 per month annual, live since 13 Jul 2026 | Press summary, not an Anthropic page; unverified |
| ChatGPT Go | 399 rupees per month | TechCrunch, 18 Aug 2025 |
| ChatGPT Plus | 1,999 rupees per month | TechCrunch, 18 Aug 2025 |
Two warnings. First, the Claude dollar figures came from a page rendered for my environment, not for an Indian visitor, so your page may show rupees. Second, the ChatGPT numbers are over a year old and OpenAI's own pages were blocked to me, so confirm on your checkout. For a price-versus-features comparison of another assistant, see the Perplexity Pro India guide.
Which payment methods work in India?
This is where I trust sources least, so each row names its source.
| Route | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Card (credit or debit) | Generally accepted; international usage must be on (my assumption; not verified from OpenAI) | Reported as the main web route in July 2026 press coverage |
| UPI | Reported at the Go launch (TechCrunch, Aug 2025); verify in your checkout | Reported not available on Anthropic's own checkout (press, July 2026); unverified |
| App-store billing | Available in the mobile apps in general; check your store | Reported as an official route; one blog claims UPI appears on the Google Play payment sheet, which conflicts with other reports |
I could not read OpenAI's or Anthropic's help articles, so nothing in the table is a vendor statement about India. The rule I would follow: open the real checkout, choose your plan, and see which methods are offered before you enter anything.
Should I pay on the web or in the mobile app?
Decide with three questions.
- Does the web checkout offer a method my bank supports? If it offers UPI or your card passes, use the web. You deal with the vendor directly for cancellations and receipts.
- Does the app-store sheet offer UPI or a store balance? If yes, it may be the lowest-friction route. The trade-off is that store billing can price differently and handles refunds through the store. I did not compare store prices against web prices, so check both before you commit.
- Is this for work? Then ask which route gives you the invoice you need, and see the GST invoice post. I found no vendor page today that states an Indian GST treatment.
What do I do if my card is declined?
The same bank-side problems that hit API billing hit subscriptions, and the fixes are the same. Turn on international or online international usage, check the per-transaction limit, approve the OTP promptly, and test without a VPN. I wrote a longer list in OpenAI API payment failed in India. Recurring charges are the other trap: a subscription is a recurring payment, and Google's India payments help page describes RBI rules that cap automatic card charges at 15,000 rupees per transaction and require an e-mandate. That page is about Google billing, not ChatGPT or Claude, but it explains why a first payment can pass and a renewal can fail. If a renewal fails, pay again manually rather than waiting.
Are there alternatives to the consumer plans?
Sometimes a subscription is the wrong thing to buy. If you mainly want to use a model from code, pay per use instead.
- Direct API, if your card works. It is the cheapest per token. My Claude API forex math post shows the arithmetic.
- AICredits. You can top up in rupees with UPI (minimum 50 rupees) and use an OpenAI-compatible base URL,
https://api.aicredits.in/v1, through this affiliate link. Per its docs, prices carry a 5% forex buffer and a 5% platform fee, and a top-up carries a Razorpay charge of about 2.36%. It does not replace a ChatGPT or Claude chat subscription; it is an API route. See my AICredits review. - A zero-forex card. The Scapia card advertises zero forex markup and is lifetime-free (referral link). Its terms changed in 2026, so verify the current fees in the app. My card comparison lists other options, including non-referral ones.
- Free tiers. If your use is light, both products have free plans. Anthropic's page lists Claude Free at 0 dollars.
A quick decision table
| Your situation | Try first |
|---|---|
| Card with international on | Web checkout with that card |
| Only UPI | ChatGPT web checkout or Android store sheet, verify live |
| Need a company invoice | Web checkout, ask for tax details before paying |
| Heavy coding use | API or a coding plan, not a chat subscription |
| Card keeps failing | Second bank, then a zero-forex card |
Last checked: 23 Oct 2026. Prices and payment methods change, and I could not read two of the four vendor pages I needed.
